We would recap some key points of this journey.

Over the years Wire Division has taken many initiatives towards Business Excellence such as :-

Embedding a safety culture throughout the organization using the Safety Excellence process guided by Du Pont.  Wire Division has successfully achieved zero LTIF status for over 850 days.

Involvement of 100% employees in improvement initiatives across the organization has been achieved through a number of TQM practices including Small Group Activities, Daily Management, Self Initiated Projects as well as Green Belt and Black Belt projects using Shainin Tools.

Initiatives on employee engagement, which are well integrated with TQM practices for improvement, have enabled Wire Division to achieve benchmark performance in many of the Gallup Q12 parameters.

To strengthen its core competency of “enhancing trusted customer relationship”,Wire Division has undertaken cross functional initiatives like Customer Service Teams, Customer Value Management and Value Management in Galvanized Wires.

Adoption of Theory of Constraints principles by DrGoldratt as well as Supplier Value Management has helped Wire Division strengthen its supplier relationship as well as achieve high delivery compliance using vendor managed inventory for its institutional business and replenishment model for its retail business.

Wire Division is proactively working towards climate change and has initiated carbon footprint mapping for all employees as well as Scope 1 and Scope 2 reduction for its manufacturing facilities through carbon abatement projects.

Going beyond the workplace, as part of its CSR initiative, Wire Division actively participates in running the VidyaMandir School and Medical Research Centre hospital at Tarapur to cater to the community needs.  Further it manages ‘Glasses for Masses’ a livelihood initiative to support underprivileged women.

Driving the ‘Innovation Culture’ by adopting the Innometer, Innomultiplier and Ethnography studies.

Multiple platforms for internal communication such as ‘Su Samvad’, ‘Coffee with Sunil’, Rendezvous’ and ‘HamaraManch’ offer seamless 2-way communication to all the employees.  This is backed by a structured, IT enabled and robust Review Architecture which covers all levels and the entire breadth of the organization.

Last year, the unit managed a historic relocation of its manufacturing facility and employees from Borivli in Mumbai to Tarapur and Jamshedpur, which was done in a complete ‘Tata Way’ with harmonious industrial relations.

We have rolled out the Business Excellence process at all the three units viz in Thailand, China and Sri Lanka with the Thailand and China units participating in the TBEM Excellence process in 2010.  Siam Industrial Wire Co Ltd, Thailand crossed 450 points and received an award for early adoption in its debut year (which is quite a rarity within the Group) and Wuxi JinyangMetal Products Co Ltd, China achieved a score of 436 points.  Starting 2012 the unit shall apply for the TBEM assessment as a single entity – Global Wires Business – including all the entities in India, Thailand, China and Sri Lanka.
