» Delegates from Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) - Mumbai Chapter visit Wire division and Cold Rolling Complex in Tarapur

On 11th July’09 Wire Division, Global Wires hosted 50 delegates from IIM – Mumbai chapter as part of the industry – institution interface initiative of the latter. The team comprised esteemed executives from BARC and students and alumni of IIT, Mumbai. The delegates arrived in the morning from Mumbai and were given a safety briefing and presentation on the history of the Wire Business by Chief –Operations. The delegates got an overview of the global footprint and technology leadership of the wire business, as a preamble to the exclusive visit to the wire plant, wire rod mill and the cold rolling complex. The delegates moved from one plant to the other with avid excitement and fascination. They were given adequate personal protective equipment to ensure high standards of visitor safety.
There were intense interactions on the shop floor in relation to the plant layout, process control systems, visual workplace management and best practices. The delegates showed sharp keenness in understanding various aspects of plant management. Each plant visit commenced with a visitors’ protocol at the entrance and a warm welcome by the plant personnel. Their undying enthusiasm in travelling the long distances from one plant to the other was demonstrative of the level of diligence of the delegates.
Having covered all the plants at a rapid pace, the delegates were taken to the officers’ colony and hosted lunch with a fun-filled Karaoke session. IIM showed its mettle in fine arts as well, with some great surprises on the floor. In the words of Dr. GK Dey, who was heading the team from IIM – Mumbai chapter, “Tata Steel has shown a high degree of passion for treating the delegates as exquisite guests right from the time of embarking in Mumbai, with unparalleled care and hospitality to make the event memorable, unlike any other industrial visit undertaken by us”.
