» RELOCATION OF WIRE MANUFACTURING PLANT FROM BORIVLI TO TARAPUR

Date: 24th August 2009

Tata Steel Global Wires Business is the leading wire manufacturing division of Tata Steel having 7 plants in India which manufacture a wide spectrum of steel wires.  The Global Wires Business also has Plants in China, Thailand and Sri Lanka and aspires to be amongst the Top 3 wire manufacturers in the world by 2011.

One of the major wire manufacturing plants is located at Borivli (East) and currently employs about 475 employees.  The Plant produces about 8000 MT of wires every month.  For the last few years, this Plant has been moving towards becoming unviable and non-competitive on account of environmental, logistics and financial issues owing to the huge cost of its presence in Mumbai.  The strategic option, therefore, was to relocate the Plant to MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) at Tarapur which is about 100 km away from Mumbai (where other plants of Wire Division are already located).  The Management assured protection of jobs to all the permanent employees in the new Plant at Tarapur.

Accordingly, discussions were held with the Union viz. Shramik Utkarsha Sabha which is a recognized Union under MRTU and PULP Act 1971 representing all the permanent employees of Borivli Plant.  After prolonged discussions, an agreement has been reached with the Union for relocation of Borivli Plant to Tarapur.  The agreement was signed between Mr. Sunil Bhaskaran (Executive in-Charge, Global Wires) and Mr. Vijay Kamble (Gen. Secy., Shramik Utkarsha Sabha) on 18th August 2009 at Bombay House.  The President of the Union, along with Union Committee Members of the Plant, as well as the Chief (Wire Division) along with Management Executives were present for the above programme.  Accordingly, all the manufacturing operations of Borivli Plant will stop on 31st August, 2009.

The management has set up world class manufacturing facilities at Tarapur and state-of-the-art technology for Pickling and Wire Drawing.
